Before we get down to Sydney
however, we need to go back a couple of
days up to the quiet parts of Brisbane.
This is where Mactrans driver Brian
Anderson, in his Kenworth Aerodyne
named ‘The Outcast,’ hooked up to a
Drake 7x8 platform trailer and 2x8 dolly
loaded up a big piling rig known as a
Baures BG 40.
This thing itself is more than 95 tonne
and it would be a couple of days just
getting it down to Sydney. So working
through a Monday and all Tuesday, Brian
made his way south down towards a
spot that can accommodate the rig; the
big parking bay on the M1 just north
of Sydney. At the stroke of midnight,
the 600hp Kenworth started up and
continued towards Sydney.
When you are an ‘out-of-towner’ in
a KW called ‘The Outcast’ then a bit of
local knowledge certainly comes in handy
and this is why Bob Tutton was enlisted
as the escort up front. Bob, or ‘old timer’
as he is affectionately known in the big
load circles is an experienced operator
and a complete professional.
The big Kenworth made it up to the M1
and was soon in the suburbs bound for
the big smoke. The big load was takingup two lanes so all care was taken which
meant for a steady journey.
An hour or so after commencing, the
big piling rig had the CBD in its sights
and around half an hour after that they
hit the first of the narrow CBD roads.
It sure was a change from the outback
stretches of road so familiar to the
Mactrans fleet.
Getting to the site was never meant
to be easy but Brian was sure making it
look that way as he effortlessly steered
the Aerodyne through streets that, over
a century ago, were built for horse and
cart!
At one point, a couple of truckloads
of firemen rushing to a job had their
domination of the road ruined when they
stumbled across the big load in their
hastened state. Brian never held them up
but they sure had their eyes wide open as
they went past!
Bob led Brian up to the north of
Sydney’s CBD and down past the actual
site before getting onto the other side
and into a labyrinth of roads that led
them to where they had to be. The Old
timer and The Outcast sure had the
position in hand and arrived at the site
