Street Machine Australia – September 2019

(Nancy Kaufman) #1

1: Much like his haircut, Alan
Cooper’s legendary BLOBAK HQ
ute was business in the front,
party in the back. A tub-mounted
blown 350ci Chev is the ultimate
party trick, and Alan ended
up suited and booted for this
photoshoot when he won the
inaugural Street Machine Of The
Year competition in 1988

2: This image of Gary Satara
chillin’ with his OVAKIL XA
hardtop would have to be up
there with the most iconic SM
photographs of all time

3: Built for little else other
than winning trophies, Troy
Hillier’s XP coupe was an
absolute work of automotive

art. Perhaps best remembered
for its full sheet-metal interior,
the car’s fabrication work was
next-level

BELOW: Another SMOTY
winner, Frank Piccolo’s
brutally tough blown, EFI XB
sedan was a proper toughie.
How are those 15x12in B45s!

HOT GOSSIP

ZERO 5 IS GO!
IT’S not every day a new speed shop opens up in
the Hunter Valley of NSW, but in mid-July Zero
Performance opened its doors to the public in
Rutherford. Boasting engine building and conversions,
paint and panel, restoration and dyno tuning services,
Zero5 is also an HDT dealer and a muscle car
importer. Its grand opening attracted a big crowd of
curious onlookers with the help of a static car display
that extended up the road to the local Autobarn.
Standouts included a large array of early and late-
model HDTs, as well as two future Drag Challenge
contenders being built by team members Brad Lowe
and Chris Sheppard.

JAI SCHULTER PONIES UP!
WE ONLY featured Jai Schulter’s gorgeous Mustang
last issue, and he already has it in pieces! The drag
racing bug has bitten once more, so the 393ci Clevo
and associated nitrous hardware are on the outer, soon
to be replaced by a monster TOCA-built 451ci all-motor
Windsor-based combo with custom CHI heads. It’ll run
on pump E85 and enable Jai to compete in D/ MSA, as
well as Drag Challenge. On the subject of Jai’s Mustang,
we left a few good folk out of the Thanks section of
his feature, so our apologies and a big shout-out to
Brett Armstrong, ‘Pud’ and Matt from Jo Seeger Smash
Repairs; 477 Garage; Coastal Auto Upholstery; Precise
Automatics; The Convertor Shop; Shawn Taskis at
Complete Tilt Tray Service; special thanks to Dylan Leo.

NEXT!
WE HAVE a bumper crop of feature cars prepared for
the October issue of Street Machine, with everything
from a pro touring pick-up to a Tuff Street and dyno-
dominating Monaro and a highly decorated debutant
from the recent WA Hot Rod & Street Machine
Spectacular. We’ll also bring you a little something
with a controversial crossbred Barra swap, and an
eight-second, wheelstanding, all-motor Corty! If that
sounds too good to miss, that’s because it is! Get yours
12 September!
