LETTER OF THE MONTH

VOTE OF CONFIDENCE?
HEY guys, the mag is great, but one thing I don’t
understand is the online voting for SMOTY. It used
to be we had to buy the magazine to get a voting slip,
but now anybody, including those who aren’t regular
readers, can vote and get all his mates to do so, etc.
I just think it’s wrong that people who are not even
readers can vote.
Baz Hammond, via Facebook
HEY Baz, I hear you. It was pretty cool back in the day
when the only way to vote in SMOTY was through the
voting form stitched into the mag. We got sacks of
them delivered to the office! But these days, folks are
reluctant to get down the post office and mail things,
even when provided with free postage. Online voting
is a lot more accessible and opens it up to people
who may not buy the mag regularly but do interact
with our content online. The other bonus is that you
can read the story on each of the cars online before
you vote. – Telfo

MAJOR MINOR
HI THERE! I’m really enjoying the Street Machine Hot
Rod #20 magazine. Loved the write-up on Sally and
John Phillips’s Morris Minor. It would be cool if you also
did a feature on their lead sled Austin A50 convertible.
Dominic Flynn, via Facebook

I’M NOT normally a fan of blacked-out chrome, but
that 15NUTZ LJ Torana (SM, Jul ’19) looks fantastic!
The black really works against the crazy flaked red
colour, the interior is a great contrast and the tunnel
ram really sets it off. But unfortunately, you’ve only got
one photo of it looking ‘real’ – when did it become the
norm to take car photos in sheds? Cars can look good
in sheds, but for some reason they always look fake –
they look Photoshopped or like a car on Gran Turismo.
When I first saw TOXIC Q (SM, Oct ’14) at MotorEx
years ago, I fell in love and I knew straight away that
it’d be my vote for SMOTY; it’s a unique colour, but in
real life the car looks amazing! Then when you featured
it, it was shed photos. I reckon a colour like that needs
the contrast of green grass and blue sky behind it to
really show it off – I honestly think with the right photos
it had a chance at winning SMOTY.
I know it’s probably expensive to shoot every car
in a studio (most cars look their best in a studio) but
whatever happened to the old ‘photo on a nice country
road just before sunset’? Cars always look good just
before sunset!
Daniel Peachey, email
HEY Dan! We have our own studio in Melbourne, but
studio shoots are difficult to pull off for cars that have
special effects paint. We love outdoor sunset shoots
and do as many as we can, but they are difficult in
winter! – Telfo
