O, The Oprah Magazine – September 2019

I was working as a flight attendant, and right before a

trip, the guy I was dating broke up with me—with no

explanation. I was devastated, but I had to go to work.

Luckily, I was flying with my roommate. On our final

layover, as I was sobbing in disbelief, she surprised me

with an ice cream sundae. I couldn’t help but smile.

“Who wants to go

halfway around

the world with me

this summer so I

can visit my son?”

Without

hesitating, Stacey

said, “Sure!”

Two months later,

we landed in

the Philippines.

my friend Ellen and I set up a daily phone call. She took an

afternoon break from her job just so I’d have someone to talk

with every day about this challenge. It was such a gift!

One particularly bad year I was so strapped

for cash that I had to forgo buying a

Christmas tree. On Christmas Eve, I heard a

knock at my door, and there stood my

girlfriend with a small tree. It’s still the

Christmas I always remember.
