There are seven types of pancakes on the
menu at Atlanta’s Pancake Social, and all are
great, but what I’m telling you to order are the
waffles. For they’re not just any waffles. They’re
savory sourdough waffles born from co-owner
Anne Quatrano’s 27 - year-old starter. The result?
A crisp, tangy delight served hot and hissing
under a silky splotch of butter. Just add syrup.
THE LAST TIME I WAS IN
Los Angeles, my friend suggested
we meet for an afternoon cocktail
at Atrium, a breezy new bar
and restaurant in Los Feliz. She
knows me too well. First there
was a succulent-filled alleyway
leading to the big brick building.
Then there were the pastel
ceramic planters brimming with
tropical leaves, the plush velvet
booths, the funky graphic
wallpaper, the giant horseshoe-
shaped bar with brass accents,
and all that California sunlight
streaming in. Oh, and a real live
tree growing in the middle of
everything. Though those BBQ-
dusted potatoes with onion
dip called me, the vibes alone
had me. Two drinks in, the
place had me questioning why
I haven’t made the move from
New York City to that L.A. lyfe.

Getting Lit
I’ve got a small collection of matchbooks,
but I’ll never use the ones from
Reception Bar in New York City. Why,
you ask? Because they’re just so
beautiful! Owner Katie Rue opted for
an oversize format and based her
design on vintage Korean postage stamps.
They’re a nod to both her Korean
heritage and the garden-inspired drinks
at her serene bar.
