Four designs to help you kick back (and forth)
T
he lazy days of summer call for a porch swing suitable
for casual chats and prolonged naps.
Handmade creations by local woodworkers offer a
wide range of styles and finishes. All come with hanging
instructions, and some include mounting hardware as
well. Porch swings require sturdy ceiling joists and hefty ropes or
cable that can support the weight of one or more people. When or-
dering, know your ceiling height.
Here’s a sampling of four designs for those ready to get into the
swing of things. —Beth DeCarboUnlike a traditional swing installed at one end of a porch, the Courting
Bed can be hung in the middle of a room, with users facing in either
direction. Made in Montgomery, Ala., the pine swing measures 85 by
55 inches, with a full-size cushion in Sunbrella’s Patio Stripe Blue.
Price:$1,525for the swing; $699 for the cushion from Four Oak Bed
Swings. Shipping is free in the continental U.S.The only thing missing is a summer novel and a glass of ice
tea. The Classic swing, made in Lancaster, Pa., measures 57
by 28 inches with a slate-stain finish. The cushion color is
Spectrum Daffodil by Sunbrella and is included in the price.
The swing hangs from natural manila ropes.
Price:$2,675, not including shipping, by Nostalgic Porch SwingFor the modern, minimalist homeowner, there’s this Modular
Swing, manufactured in Olathe, Kan. The 63½-by-18-inch
frame is a powder-coated black aluminum, and the natural
cypress seat has a clear, oil-based sealer to protect it from
the elements. This design doesn’t include cushions.

the swing comes in four sizes—the bed shown here is 92 by 42
inches—and a variety of finishes. The twin-size cushion is covered
in Sunbrella Sailcloth Salt fabric.
