What Car?
The BMW1Series has
finally “gone mainstream”.
Previous models have been
rear-wheel drive–alayout
more commonly associated
with sports and luxury cars
–that made it an outlier
among hatchbacks. But for
the sake of simplicity and
cost, BMW has now
brought it in line with the
market, freeing up some
much-needed space in the
rear. The result isacar
that is “up there with the
best premium family cars”.

From the outside, it looks
out of proportion, with a
long front end and “ugly”
large grille, but in other
respects, this isawell-
designed car. The boot is
nowapractical 380 litres,
and there’s more space for
the rear passengers too.
The materials inside feel
“generous and plush”.
While the touchscreen is
mostly clear and easy to
operate, the satnav isabit
confusing–but there is an
optional head-up display.

BMW is offering five new
engines for the1Series,
with the entry-level 118i
turbo-petrol and the mid-
range 118d turbo-diesel
likely to be the UK’s
big sellers. At 60.1mpg,
the diesel is particularly
impressive. Overall, it feels
“grown up” on the road,
in the way that it “steers,
rides and stops”. Asacar
that performs well and
“looks and feels more
expensive than it is”, it is
“hard to fault”.
●You’ll needalicence if you’re fishing for
freshwater fish, salmon, trout, sea trout or
eels. Without one, you can facea£2,500
fine. Note that the coarse fishing season is
closed between 15 March and 15 June.

the centrepin (the simple spinning spool)

●Useasingle-strand nylon (monofilament)
line to start. The breaking strain (strength)
depends on the species of fish in question.
●The seven main baits are: bread, worms,
sweetcorn, luncheon meats, boilies (boiled
bait balls), pellets and maggots.
●Release fish as quickly as possible, with
minimal handling. Haveanet ready, wet
your hands, pull the hook out cleanly with
pliers, then hold the fish in the river facing
upstream to let it recover.
