using a baby carrier or a sling helps
bonding continue throughout the first
year. Babywearing gives you a front-
row seat to become familiar with your
infant’s cues for hunger, boredom, or
fatigue. As a result, he’ll feel secure
knowing you’ll meet his needs.

Find the best option.
Whether you pick a sling, an inward-
to outward-facing convertible
carrier, or a backpack carrier, pay
attention to the directions on the
label, including height, weight, and
age requirements. Your baby’s size
is particularly important with a front
carrier, especially if she’s a preemie,
since a small infant could slip out
of the leg holes. If she meets the
requirements, your baby can ride
in a sling or an inward-facing
ca rrier as soon as she’s home from
the hospital. She’s ready to face
outward when she has enough head
and neck control to look up, down,
and around easily, which usually
happens at around 6 months.

Be attentive.
When your baby is in a sling and
pressed close to your body, you’ll
need to watch him for any signs that
he’s struggling to breathe. Use
extra caution if he’s under 4 months,
doesn’t have very good head control,
was born prematurely, is a twin, or
has a respiratory infection like a
cold. No matter what kind of carrier
you use, make sure his nose and
mouth are uncovered, his chin is up,
and he’s not slouched or slumped
over. Babywearing is not for snoozing.
If your little one falls asleep, you
should transfer him from the carrier
to his crib because his head could
f lop forward or to the side, interfering
with his breathing.

Ask for help.
When you’re first using a front carrier,
it’s best to have help taking your
baby in and out. Once you’ve got the
carrier on, let someone place her
inside while you buckle her securely.
Always wear sturdy, comfortable
shoes, and don’t overload yourself
with bags since the greatest danger
