Lekima is the fourth typhoon to
barrel through the western Pacifi c
this week. The typhoon, which
briefl y strengthened into a super
typhoon last week, battered Taiwan
with 120mph winds and inundated
the northern mountains with 90cm
(35in) of rainfall.
Typhoon Lekima was also the
strongest storm in fi ve years to hit
China. The torrential downpours
over the weekend triggered deadly
landslides near Shanghai, as water
pooled over fl ooded soils. Monsoon
fl oods have submerged the southern
peninsula of India, with about 80
landslides in Kerala after heavy rain.
The monsoon runs from June
to September and usually delivers
70% of India’s annual rainfall, with
hours of rain on most days. Before
this week, monsoon rainfall levels
were below normal in the southern
peninsula but are now above.
Winter swept through Australia
last week as a large and complex
area of low pressure dragged cold
polar air across south and south-
eastern states. Hail, thunderstorms
and winds of up to 75mph lashed
Victoria, snapping Frankston Pier.
Across Victoria’s high ground ,
45cm of snow fell within 24 hours,
with many New South Wales ski
resorts also collecting about 1 metre
of snow. Tamsin Green  MetDesk
