VOTE FOR HOPE
“May 9th 2018 was just
the beginning; there’s still
more work to be done.”
— Datin Dian Lee

T

he word ‘sustainability’
in recent years has become an
overused term, but there’s no
denying that what it stands
for—reducing or recycling waste,
managing our natural resources more carefully,
improving business processes—will remain
relevant, now and in the future. These pressing
issues continue to be addressed as people and
businesses discover innovative ways to inform
sustainable practices. Because whether we like
it or not, sustainability is now a way of doing
business, it’s no longer a competitive advantage.
Throughout this issue, we do our part by
bringing this hot topic to the fore, starting
with our cover story (page 114) on fi ve industry
movers and shakers like Datuk Lai Voon Hon,
David Mizan Hashim, and Sarena Cheah who
practise sustainability in different aspects of their
work and business. We even talk to father-of-two,
Vinesh Sinha (page 66) who began his career by
accident, and today his pioneering company
can proudly say that the biofuel it produces
is 70 per cent cleaner in terms of the carbon
equivalent emission it emits.
On the retail front, our resident oenophile
Sarah Heller, who holds the distinction as the
world’s youngest master of wine, educates on
eco-conscious terroir matters as she gives her
wine recommendations (page 148), while we
delve into Lush’s drive to reduce excessive
packaging (page 100).
We’re not forgetting that Merdeka day is
around the corner, on August 31st. Having
recently celebrated his 94th birthday at the
time of print, Tun Mahathir certainly breaks the
record as the oldest serving prime minister in
the world, who was instrumental in the change
of government in last year’s general election.
And now, thanks to a documentary produced by
three dynamic women, we can fi nally see the man
behind the politician’s veneer. Turn to page 126
for our exclusive interview with Datin Dian Lee,
Ineza Roussille and Ruby Yang—guaranteed to be
a page-turner!
