ear Millennials and Gen Z girls (and pretty much anyone younger
than I) —

In the 90s, a song came out by Baz Luhrmann called Everybody’s Free to Wear
Sunscreen based on an essay by Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich. The
song off ered several words of wisdom to the graduating class of 1997, and
since graduation season just rolled by, I had a listen to it on YouTube for a laugh.
Surprisingly, the lyrics were much more sagacious than I remembered, and there
were many references to health and fi tness I hadn’t noticed before. So to the
classes of 2019 and beyond, I impart to you a
few of the more erudite bits of laconic wisdom
harvested from this song for your consideration
— as well as some viable solutions and action
points to address them from this very issue.

Wear sunscreen. Sunscreen was not widely
available when I was a kid, and I am paying
my dermatologist in spades for it today. But
now there are hundreds of products at your
fi ngertips. Use them.
Check out “Surf and Turf” on Page 48 for
some great SPF products.

You are not as fat as you imagine. Sadly,
body dysmorphia is still rampant — maybe
even more so today
because of social media. One of the very few athletes
I tell young women to follow is Oxygen coach Amber
Dodzweit Riposta. Check out her “before and after”
images on her IG feed @amberdodzweit.

Do one thing every day that scares you.
Complacency is the wrecking ball of progress, and
unless you are propelled forward by a healthy dose of
fear and adrenaline, you will stagnate.
Leave yourcomfort zone and grow mentally and physically with “Muscle and
Flow,” Page 58.

Stretch. The cause of most back pain and soft tissue injury in your later years is
a direct result of infl exibility. Stretching is a simple, free way to stay mobile and
pain-free for life.
Mobilize your hips and thighs with “Inner Workings” on Page 17.

Enjoy your body. Use it in every way you can.Oxygen is a celebration of this
edict and hopefully, with issue in hand, this is your exact intention.
Go playoutside with the cardio workouts in “Your Summer Burn,” Page 32.

Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly. They
will also perpetuate the disquieting, dysmorphic attitude of young women.
Plus, you can’t aff ord those clothes anyhow.
Read “The Power of Solitude” on Page 30 for tips on self-love.

But trust me on the sunscreen. For real. You’ll save thousands when you’re

  1. I should know.
