Tolkien
This biographical drama explores the early
life of the orphaned author of The Hobbit
and The Lord of the Rings, J. R. R. Tolkien,
including his befriending of a group of fellow
artists and writers at school. Their bond of
fellowship grows over the years as he also
finds love, only for these friendships to be
severely tested with the onset of World War I.
FIVE FACTS:
- J. R. R. Tolkien was born in Orange Free
State – now South Africa – on January 3, 1892. - He is portrayed in the film when young
by Harry Gilby, and as a young adult by
Nicholas Hoult. - Lily Collins also stars as Edith Bratt,
Tolkien’s lifelong love and later wife. - Tolkien’s estate issued a statement making
clear that it did not “approve” or “endorse”
the biopic. - However, director Dome Karukoski
argued that not working with the Tolkien
estate was creatively beneficial, stating:
“To dig out the emotional truth of the
characters, you have to try to not hide
certain evidence and when you work with
an estate, what happens is that that kind of
gets suffocated.”
