2020, when it’s expected the firm will add 5G to
the iPhone and overhaul its design, replacing
Face ID with screen-wide Touch ID.
Size-wise, the 2019 iPhone lineup is expected
to look pretty similar to the 2018 range, with a
5.8-inch iPhone, a 6.5-inch iPhone, and a lower-
cost 6.1-inch iPhone. Apple is also expected to
tweak the design and introduce a new frosted
glass rear to differentiate the iPhone XI from
the iPhone XS, falling in line with Google’s Pixel
smartphone design. Previous generations of
the iPhone have seen Apple rotate through
a number of combinations like plastic,
aluminum, and glass, but it’s the latter that
offers a premium feel and is favored by most.
A frosted glass design, should it copy Google,
will be matte, soft-touch, and smudge-free,
which has been a problem on some iPhone
generations, transforming the feel of the phone
in your hand.
Apple is also expected to introduce new colors
for the 2019 iPhone, but only on the iPhone
XR successor. Apple will reportedly remove
blue and coral and replace them with new
lavender and green color options, available
with matching cases and Apple Watch bands.
Analysts and insiders have disagreed over
whether Apple will use only OLED displays on
the 2019 models, as some expect the iPhone
XR successor to sport a cheaper LCD display as
it did in 2018. What is expected, however, is a
lighter and thinner iPhone - Apple is widely
reported to adopt Samsung-designed OLED
display technology called Y-OCTA in 2019’s
models. They’re touch-integrated flexible
panels and are cheaper to manufacture.
