FOR ME, SIMPLICITY IS KEY. In my baking (as with my cooking), I look
for straightforward recipes that let a few central ingredients shine. Part of
that stems from my general aesthetic, but the rest has to do with time. With
two little kids running around, my wife and I search for recipes that can be
made without much fuss. That is the beauty of the Caramel Upside-Down
Cake (page 49). We can make the sauce a few days ahead of time, then whip
together the rest quickly.
Throughout this special collection of Taste of the South favorites,
you’ll fi nd quite a few dishes that fi t that bill. We’ve scoured our archives
looking for baked goods that are as quick and easy as they are delicious and
satisfying. From Quick Monkey Bread Rolls (page 28) to the Apple Skillet
Cake (page 58), I know there will be plenty of recipes my kids will ask for
over and over again.
But sometimes more is more. When we’re baking for a special
occasion—or just to treat ourselves—we look forward to spending a little
more t i me i n t he k itchen when we k now t he resu lt wi l l be spec t acu la r. I wi l l
always say yes to Pecan-Bourbon Sticky Buns (page 40), Salted Caramel
and Chocolate Pecan Pie (page 72), or a gorgeous sweet potato tart topped
with toasted marshmallows (page 77).
Whether you’re looking for an everyday treat or the perfect ending to a
party, I’m sure you’ll get excited about some of these sweets.
