OpalsOpals are quite soft,
6.5 on the Mohs scale, and are
about 5-6 per cent water. This makes
them subject to “crazing,” ine cracking
that can lead opal’s splitting in half, hence the
stone’s unfair reputation as being bad luck for
those not born in October. Store opals in a soft cloth
or cotton wool, and if you live in a dry climate,
periodical drops of water.
Shape Look beyond a
gemstone’s carat weight.
You can have two
diamonds, each weighing
a carat, but one can look
signiicantly smaller if it is
a deep stone. Most stones
will have a “depth
percentage” (the ratio of
the stone’s depth to the
stone’s width or diameter)
of around 60 per cent. If
a stone approaches a depth
percentage of 70 per cent,
not only will it look
smaller, but also brilliant.
Necklace We choose
our clothing to highlight
our best features (and mask
others), so why not strategise with
your jewellery? A little trompe l’oeil
goes long way. Do you have a lovely collar
bone? Drape some gold over those ine bones
of yours or let a small diamond nestle in
the notch of your neck. Subtle can
be alluringly striking.
