“I’ve been channelling my mum
by making little home videos
called ‘Cooking with Mrs Fong’.
I’m parodying her but honouring
her at the same time. She is
a really cool role model. She
phones and texts me every day
about how to lead a better life.
She’s hilariously funny without
meaning to be and some of
her ideas are completely out of
whack with anybody else’s.
Ever glamorous, Mrs Fong is a
Hong Kong-born tai tai of nearly
80 and takes meticulous care
of herself. She never leaves the
house without being perfectly
preened and polished. The
clothes, jewellery and wigs

are all items that have been
given to her by her mother.
“When my mum sees my
latest Mrs Fong video, she
calls me afterwards and says:
‘You know, I don’t speak like
that.’ I’m then like: ‘I know,
Mum! I’m hamming it up for the
audience.’ Then she’ll say: ‘You
made the recipe wrong – we’re
going to be sued.’ And then I’m
like: ‘Mum, it’s just for fun!’”
