experience of mariners on seagoing ships these days, one recurring
theme is seamanship. The set of skills comprising seamanship is
disappearing now that the operation of onboard systems requires people
who are more like technicians than traditional seafarers. Seamanship
may be something of a dying art these days, but it’s an essential skill
that’s gained mostly by experience, particularly when it comes to
driving lifeboats and rescue boats.
This book cannot teach you seamanship, but it will help to guide
you along the right path and at least provide some solutions that will
ensure survival in the challenging situations that can develop when
abandoning ship and in rescue work.
