WESTERN AUSTRALIA BRANCH

Î The Western Australia Branch organised a
day visit for the Senior Vice President Jillian
Carson-Jackson FNI. The team for the day
tour consisted of Jillian Carson-Jackson FNI,
Capt Peter Waller AFNI, Capt Stuart Davey
AFNI, Capt Rory Main AFNI and Capt Zubin
Bhada AFNI.
Our first visit was to the Offshore Simulator
Centre in Bibra Lake, where Capt Mark
Pointon showed us around his establishment.
This included all the various training/activity
set-ups including crane operations, offshore
deck work, dynamic positioning training
set-up, the ‘360° Dome Simulator’ used for DP
training and the more recent research work
on real-time simulation for models in field
testing in the maritime industry, offshore, oil
and gas and mining sectors.
The team then journeyed to Fremantle for
a meeting with Deputy Harbour Master Capt
Martin Toohey AFNI at Bather Beach House.
We carried on to Fremantle Port for a tour of
the control tower by Capt Stuart Davey AFNI
(Deputy Harbour Master Fremantle Port),
who showed us the process involved in ship
scheduling in the port of Fremantle. We were
introduced to the two on-duty VTS operators
who were kind enough to share their stories
on what went on in the Vessel Traffic Service
(VTS) control tower.

IBERIAN BRANCH & US WEST COAST BRANCH

Training ship visit

Î The Iberian Branch accepted an invitation of
the honorary secretary West Coast US Branch,
Dr Colin Dewey AFNI, to visit the TS Golden Bear
during its port call in Lisbon.
As the Iberian Branch covers such a large
area, only a few of our members were able
to attend. Along with second- and third-year
students from the Portuguese Nautical School,
we numbered some 40 visitors in total.
Golden Bear is the primary training platform
on which cadets from California Maritime
Academy (CalNav) apply technological and
leadership skills learned ashore. Each summer,
cadets in their first and third years depart with
licensed faculty officers for two months during
the annual training cruise. During these periods
at sea, intellectual learning, applied technology,
and leadership development blend daily as
cadets apply what they have learned in the
classroom, in the lab, in the Corps and on the
waterfront.
This year, the voyage went through the
Panama Canal and across to Barbados, before

arriving at the Port of Lisbon. The next port of
call was also in Portugal, at the port of Ponta
Delgada, Azores Island, before returning to the
USA via port calls in Florida and Texas. You can
read more about the 2019 training voyage at
http://voyage.csum.edu/2019/.

We would like to thank all who made this
visit possible, including West Coast US Branch
secretary Dr Colin Dewey, Golden Bear’s Master
Captain Sam Pecota MNI and all his crew and
cadets.
