Representing The Nautical Institute
Î to the maritime industry and beyond

Lessons learned
Vice President Andre Le Goubin FNI represented The Nautical Institute at
a workshop on ‘Lessons Learned in the Operation of Maritime Terminals’
in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He writes: ‘The workshop was two days of ‘closed’
sessions, with no recordings permitted and no publication of papers. Cell
phones were not allowed during the sessions. This enhanced security
greatly encouraged participants to open up and confi dently share their
experiences and the knowledge gained from them, for the benefi t of us all.
I spoke on how we can gain experiential knowledge from marine
accidents, incidents and near misses, and how we can share that
knowledge, with a particular emphasis on mentoring. This was well
received as anyone can be a mentor so there was something for
everyone! My thanks to SLOM and Transpetro for organising and hosting
an excellent conference and to everyone for so openly sharing their
experiences.

New appointment
Congratulations to NI President Capt Nick Nash FNI, who has been
appointed as Master of Princess’ latest cruiseship, Enchanted Princess.
Nick will bring the ship into service from the Fincantieri shipyard in
Monfalcone, Italy, in June next year. ‘It is an honour and a testament to
dedicated years of service,’ said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises president.

Congratulations to two members of our Poland Branch who were
presented with awards at the Transnav conference. Capt Szczepen
Kowaleski FNI has been presented with the Ulysses award to mark an
