101 SOUTHERN HOME | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019

In the master suite, a soothing monochromatic color
scheme and a mix of linens and natural textures
reinforce the sophisticated architecture. Left: A
freestanding Picasso tub anchors the bath. Symmetrical
archways lead to a shower room. Metal casement
windows swing open exposing custom barrel tile
inserts and creating a luxurious open-air spa shower.

are hidden from view but still close enough for efficiency. Tucked
away in a separate wing, the working kitchen accommodates
appliances including the refrigerator and dishwasher, ample space
for prep and cleanup, and a generous walk-in pantry. There’s even a
pass-through casement window that opens onto a grilling section
set just out of view off the dining loggia.
Throughout the home, the vocabulary of layered finishes and
authentic materials is both expressive and tranquil. The vaulted brick
ceiling in the kitchen, textured plaster walls, rough-hewn beams, and
vaulted oak ceilings reflect a craftsmanship that defines the house as a
handmade object. A palette of rich earth tones, textured neutrals, and
subtle colors weave from room to room, as well as the inviting outdoor
spaces. The homeowners’ furnishings and accessories are personal
and sentimental. Lori and Chris found many of the items on their
travels and at local decorating shops. Most of the art was painted by
Chris, and Lori designed the chandelier in the stair tower.
Whether designing a home or preparing a meal, attention to
detail makes all the difference. The Mediterranean sensibilities of this
residence meld with honest materials and a made-to-order plan with
seamless connections to nature. It’s the perfect recipe for a new home
with an understated elegance you can live in and love every day.
