wanted to keep it more welcoming than you’d
expect a big English house to be.”
Paying homage to the existing 1920s
architecture on the mountain, limestone entries
were inspired by Lookout Mountain Presbyterian
and Lookout Mountain Elementary School. “That
was one of the ways we helped tie the house to the
area and infuse it with a story so that it didn’t feel
brand new,” says Doody. “We wanted to celebrate
the front entry.” For the flooring, wood samples
were spread across the master bedroom—which
had the most ideal lighting—and raw, white oak
was the consensus, as it pulled the lighter tones
out of the stone and kept things looking youthful.
The designers also took note of the blue from the
vast, open-sky view and sparkling pool and used it
as an accent color in the great room. “We wanted
it to be fresh but timeless. Not predictable, not
boring,” says Davis. “It’s serious on the exterior,
