Aftera longdeliberationoverthisyear’scommended
projects,thejuryagreedthatTheGardenBunkieby
ReddogArchitectsdeservedtheSustainabilityaward.
Thissmallbuilding,akintoa grannyflat,iscalled
the“bunkie”inreferencetothenamegiventohumble
Ontarioguestcottages.Beautifullydetailedand
designed,thelight-filledbuildingconnectsintimately
tothegarden,providinga flexiblespacethatcouldbe
a quietretreatfora newparent,anevening workspace
or a guesthouseforextendedfamily.
TheGardenBunkiewasawardedforits
modesty,andforitsuseoftimberandsimplematerials
toproduceanaffordableoutcomethatmakesboth
a socialandecologicalstatement.Inparticular,the
jurycommendedtheprojectteamfordesigningaround
existingtreesandconnectingthedwellingtothe
locallandscape,achievingbiophilicbenefitsforthe
occupantswhilerespectingnature.Theuseofsliding
screens,skylightsandwell-orientatedwindowsallows
thebuildingtogainpassivenaturallight,heatingand
cooling.Thisconsideredcollaborationbetweenthe
architect,structuralengineerandbuilderhasresulted
in an affordable, adaptable and integrated outcome.
