amenity.It’sa cleverpieceofplanning.Upstairs,oneof
severalbedroomsskewsacrosstheplan,takingtheprivate
spaceawayfromtheneighbouringapartmentssoasto
reduceissuesofoverlooking.
TinaandWill,anarchitecturalgenerationapart,
haveaneasyunderstandingofoneanother’sstrengths.
Tinaconfessestobeingmoreorthogonalinherthinkingand
saysthatWill’sangularshiftsgoagainsthernaturalinstincts,
but,beyondthatfirstimpulse,theycreateexcitement.Will,
a generationyounger,hashoneda cleardesignsignature
duringyearsofrunninghisownpractice,butsayshe
sometimesfeelsconstrainedbyhisarchitecturalthinking
comparedtothatofTina,whosedesignapproachis
moreunfettered.
“Ilikea cleardiagramanda clearvision,”saysWill.
“Ialwaysgobacktotheoriginalprincipleandsometimesthat
makesmeundercookthings.Tinalooksatthedetail;she’s
goodatputtingherselfintheclients’shoes.”Clearly,there’s
a balance,anda lotoftrustbetweenthetwo,thatworks.
AtRooftopPavilion(2014),atopa heritage
apartmentbuilding,creasesinthearchitecturetranspose
emphaticallyfromtheplantothesection.Thehome’sroof
- folding,origami-like– ishardworkinginitsinteractions
withthehighlyurban,inner-Sydneysetting,droppingto
provideprivacyandenclosurebeforerisinguptoanopen
sky.TheBritishclienthadn’tbeeninculcatedwiththemore
standardSydneydesiretoopeneverythinguptothevista.
Thisallowedthedesignerstoinsteadframeconsidered
views,andtocreatea greatervarietyofindoor and outdoor
spaces under the canopy of the roof.

sawan opportunity
tostart afreshand
toworkin adifferent
way–more quietly
andagainstthe
idea ofarchitecture
as a brand.
