Conversations풀려나는 기억,
지속되는 대화지하철 1호선 남영역 승강장에 서면 스크린
도어 너머로 단정한 흑벽돌 건물이 보인다.
1976년 건설된 이 건물은 7년 뒤인 1983년
7층으로 증축돼 현재의 모습을 갖추게 됐다.
본관과 별관, 부속건물로 구성된, 이른바 남
영동 대공분실(이하 대공분실)이다. 김수근
이 설계한 이 건축물은 독재정권에 비판적인
인사들을 탄압하는 용도로 오랜 기간 사용됐
다. 이후 경찰청 보안분실, 경찰청 인권센터
등으로 변경되었는데, 현재 민주화운동기념
사업회가 관리운영하며 2022년 ‘민주인권
기념관’으로 거듭날 예정이다.
6월 10일부터 진행 중인 기획전 <잠금해제>
는 이곳에서 벌어진 인권유린의 과거를 기억
하며 이 공간이 민주인권기념관으로 다시 태
어남을 알리기 위해 마련됐다. 잭슨홍, 백승
우, 홍진원, 일상의실천, 진달래&박우혁, 언
메이크랩, 정이삭, 김영철 등 모두 여덟 팀이
참여해 어두운 과거를 조명한다. 전시 총감독
인 김상규(서울과학기술대학교 교수)는 “이
곳이 과거의 흔적으로 남거나 이미 끝난 사건
처럼 잊히지 않도록 해 끊임없는 대화가 이어
질 수 있기를 바라며 전시를 기획했다”고 취
지를 설명했다.
잭슨홍은 별관 옥상에 옥외 간판 구조물 ‘빈
칸’을 설치했다. 길이가 1.5m 남짓한 이 간판
에는 “이 건축물에 관한 확인 가능한 정보”들
이 적혀 있다. 순서대로 ‘김수근’, ‘철근콘크리
트 흑벽돌’, ‘1976’ 등의 단어와 그 사이에 쉼
표가 정보의 전부다. 하지만 ‘김수근’과 ‘철근
콘크리트 흑벽돌’ 사이의 넓은 빈칸은 적히지
않은, 다시 말해 확인 불가능한 사실들에 대해
생각하게 한다.
진달래&박우혁의 ‘적색 사각형’은 건물 외부
에서 도드라지는 작업으로 관람객의 시선을
끈다. 이 작업은 5층 조사실 창문에 붉은 판을
삽입한 것인데, 밖에서 볼 때 흑벽돌 건물의 5
층을 따라 붉은 패턴이 아름답게 디자인된 듯
하다. 그러나 이는 조사실에서 흘러나왔다는잠금해제

in 1976 and expanded to seven floors
seven years later in 1983, was the so-
called Namyeong-Dong Anti-Communist
Branch of the Korean National Security
Headquarters. Consisting of the main
building, an annexe, and an attached
building, the structure, designed by
Kim Swoo Geun, has long been used to
oppress those critical of the authoritarian
regime. The site, which was later changed
to the National Police Agency’s Security
Branch and human rights centre, will be
transformed into the Democracy and
Human Rights Memorial Hall in 2022.
The exhibition, ‘Unlock,’ which opened
on June 10, was conceived as a memo-
rial to the past human rights abuses
experienced here and to announce the
ways in which this place will be reborn
as a memorial hall to democracy and
human rights. A total of eight teams will
participate in exposing the dark past of
this site. Kim Sangkyu (professor, Seoul
National University of Science) explained
the purpose of the exhibition: ‘I organised
the exhibition in the hope that this place
would not be forgotten so that constant
dialogue could continue’.
Jackson Hong installed an outdoor sign
structure Blank on the rooftop of the
annexe building. The 1.5 metre-long sign
reads ‘Confirming information about
the building’: ‘Kim Swoo Geun’, ‘steel-
concrete black brick’, ‘1976’ and commas
exist between these words. However,붉은 빛을 재현한 것으로 그때의 시간과 기억
을 되새기게 하는 시도다.
언메이크랩은 당시 식당으로 사용됐던 대공
분실의 부속시설에 주목했다. 이들은 현재 비
어 있는 2층을 일상적 소리로 채우고 한쪽에
‘평범한 장치’를 설치했다. 누수되는 파이프
아래에 놓인 이 기계장치는 시소처럼 오르내
리는 운동을 반복하여 똑똑 떨어지는 물을 맞
는다. 단순한 움직임과 소리들은 대공분실 본
관에서 자행된 야만과 이러한 야만이 일상과
무관치 않음을 상기시킨다.
이외에도 계단과 벽 등 대공분실의 건축적 요
소를 재조립한 ‘계단 너머’(정이삭), 빛과 소
리로 피해자들의 증언을 전달하는 ‘감각의 증
언’(김영철), 국가폭력의 날 선 증언과 생경한
사진을 통해 냉전의 언어를 살피는 ‘빨갱이’
(홍진훤×일상의실천) 등이 과거와 현재를
돌아보게 한다. 전시는 9월 29일까지.

Jin Dallae & Park Woohyuk’s Red
Rectangles attracts the attention of visi-
tors with a work embossed on the outside
the building. The work inserted a red plate
into the windows of a narrow five-story
investigation room, and from the outside,
the red pattern along the fifth floor of a
black brick building seems beautifully
designed. However, this was an artistic
attempt made to remind people of the
block’s history and of a time when a red
light shone from the investigation room.
Unmake Lab noted the attached building
of the Anti-Communist Branch, which
was used as a cafeteria. With everyday
sounds filling the currently empty second
floor, they installed Banality of Things on
one side. The machine sits under a leak-
ing pipe to invite dripping water, repeat-
edly moving up and down like a see-saw.
Simple movements and sounds remind
us of the barbarism committed in this
building—this savagery is not estranged
from our everyday life.
In addition, this makes us revisit the past
and present through works including
Beyond the Staircase (Chung Isak), a
combination of architectural elements in
the building, such as stairs and walls and
stairs, and Testimonies of Senses (Kim
Young Chul), which conveys testimony
from victims through light and sound. The
exhibition is on until Sep. 29.
