Establishing a Strong Underpainting

thevalleyfloorandcameacrossthisbeautiful stand of cottonwoods just starting to turn. The dramatic passing clouds
and strong shadows were hard to pass up.”


Step 1
Sheusesa hardNuPasteltolayinthepreliminarysketch,
thensetsa lightlayerofpastelintotheshapes,using a
general value and neutral color for each one.


Step 2
Usinga largehogbristlebrush
dippedintoa smallamountof
Turpenoid,shegoesoverone
shapeata time,meltingthe
pastelbuttryingnottomix
thecolorsatthispoint.The
gesturesofherstrokesmimic
thegesturesoftheobjectsshe
ispainting.TheTurpenoidtakes
approximatelyfiveminutesto
dry,andthensheisable toap-
ply color on top.
