Bodyshop – August 2019

Paint apprentices

The assessment days for bodyshop Awards 2019 continued,
Remit were on hand to determine the apprentice winners.

Three paint technician apprentices lined up to
undertake four tasks, all 45 minutes each - and they
looked a bit nervous! All separated by screens in
their own mini-workshops and watched over by an
independent assessor from Remit Group, this was no
ordinary training day for these three competitors.

For the apprentices, these award assessments are

in this year’s competition are indicative of the way
apprenticeships will be assessed in future.

With the arrival of the new paint, body and MET
standards - which Remit Group are launching later this
year - practical End Point Assessments (EPAs), that
mirror these competitions will become the norm, with

they would rectify eight paint faults, which included
blistering, poor opacity and contamination.
The standard of work required of this trio was high as
the three apprentices moved on to their second task.

application of foundation materials. And it’s not just the
practical application of skills that was being judged, as

Task three included the removal of a run on
a pre-painted panel. The competitors were

a satisfactory standard.
To complete their assessment, the apprentices
were tasked with preparing a primed repair, ready
for the application of top coat. They had to then
blend the basecoat, dry and apply clearcoat following
manufacturers’ data.

Throughout the day judges were constantly checking
for the correct use of PPE, the use of the appropriate
tools as well as ensuring the competitors made the

The winner has been selected. But we can’t tell you -
they will be revealed in September.
