of the earliest American electric cars in existence
and certainly the earliest one that raced.”
It retains its original leather license plate with
Riker’s initials, the fi rst car registered in the state of
New York. Andrew Riker drove the car to victory at
the Mechanics Fair at Charles River Park in Mas-
sachusetts in 1898 and again in 1900 at a race at the
1900 Paris Exposition. He also won fi rst place at the
fi rst 50-mile road race in America, on Long Island,
N.Y. In its heyday, the Riker could reportedly reach
40 mph and travel 50 miles on a charge.

Blackhawk Museum founder
Behring dies at 91
DANVILLE, Calif _ Kenneth Behring, a former
owner of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and founder
of the Blackhawk Museum, died June 25 at the age
of 91. Behring accumulated his fortune through suc-
cessful careers in auto sales and real estate develop-
ment, including purchasing an area east of Danville
and developing a series of communities. He became
a part owner of the Seahawks, then sold the team for
a reported $194 million to billionaire Microsoft co-
founder Paul Allen.
Behring was involved in many national and in-
ternational charities. He founded the Wheelchair
Foundation, which has provided more than 1 mil-
lion wheelchairs to the needy around the world, and

publications. The purchase “signifi cantly extends our footprint in
passionate markets that fi t Active Interest Media’s vision for future
growth,” said AIM President & CEO Andrew Clurman. “These
groups bring a combined publishing history of more than 300
years and audiences that demonstrate incredible loyalty through
their attendance at events, participation in online conversations,
and high rates of membership and subscription renewal.”
The brands will become part of AIM’s existing Home Group, a
thriving operation based in Des Moines, Iowa, that includes lead-
ing woodworking and gardening brands such as The Woodsmith
and Garden Gate. “We were attracted to this acquisition by the ob-
vious synergies between our audiences, content capabilities, and
consumer-focused products,” added Home Group President Peter
Miller. “These brands have diversifi ed from their print roots to
include robust digital, event, online education, and other business
extensions, and there’s a lot both sides can learn from each other.”
“We’re thrilled to welcome all 67 staff dedicated to these
brands to the AIM family,” said Clurman. “We will maintain the
existing operations and teams in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Stevens
Point, Wis., while providing support that will help drive growth
from our video, digital marketing, and creative services units in
AIM’s Boulder headquarters.”
