195.6 cubic inches. That was enough to
produce 50 hp at 2600 rpm. Auburns
weighed between 2,555 and 3,025 lbs.,
so the big six was more than adequate in
the motivating department. The power-
to-weight ratio provided good pep and
pickup and gave the Auburn 6-43 out-
standing hill-climbing abilities. It was
also touted as being extremely economi-
cal on fuel and oil.
The left side of the 6-43 motor had
the intake and exhaust manifolds bolted
to it, with the Stromberg carburetor —
which was made especially for Auburn
— attached. The super-heated intake
manifold encouraged more complete
combustion for better fuel economy in
winter. The carburetor included a hot air
connection to the exhaust pipe for quick
and easy starting in winter. On the right
side of the engine were mounted the
electrical units.
Additional features of the Auburn
six included lightweight cast-iron pis-
tons with three rings; silent chain drive;
a drilled crankshaft for force-feed lu-
brication; and four main bearings. The
crankshaft was exceptionally heavy
and perfectly balanced. The engine had
a steel fi ve-quart oil reservoir and lu-
bricating oil went through a thorough
straining process upon its return to the
reservoir before being re-circulated
through the engine.
The engine was held in a three-point
suspension system with a fl exible front
support that permitted slight oscillation
to relieve any strain on the engine when
the car was running over uneven ground.
Ahead of the engine was an over-capac-
ity radiator of the cellular type with a
copper core and tank. The radiator’s
pressed steel shell was detachable and a
fl exible spring-mounting setup absorbed
vibrations.
Mounted behind the engine was the
transmission, which had its main shaft
mounted on large, annular ball bear-
ings. The transmission gears were made
of chrome-nickel steel and were oil
tempered. The countershaft gears were
also made of chrome-nickel steel. They
were of the spool type and rotated on a
stationary shaft. The emergency brake
worked on the transmission shaft.
The Auburn 6-43 was a small car by
the standards of 1924 and being pow-
ered by a six made it relatively powerful
for its time. Auburn referred to it as “A
smaller Six of Auburn quality with body

lines and fi nish that are absolutely un-
usual in a Six selling at near its price.”
For those who wanted to spend more

and get more, Auburn offered the 6-63
— or “6 Supreme” —model, that had an
even better Lycoming power plant.
