Never call the TR3A a convertible — it’s not. The Triumph
is a classic roadster with fi tted side curtains rather than roll-up
windows, so it’s mainly a warm-weather car, though back in
the day, thousands of stalwarts did drive them year-round, even
in the north. My big brother Michael was among that crowd
of enthusiasts.
Production of the TR3A began in England during Septem-
ber 1957 and continued through October 1961. During that pe-
riod, a bit more than 58,000 were produced, with most of them
being sent to the United States where they were extremely
popular. For 1962, the TR3A was replaced by the all-new TR4,
though a small number of TR3Bs — a one-year-only model
— were also produced. The TR3B was built in order to offer
a lower-priced model prior to the introduction of the budget-
priced Spitfi re that arrived in late 1962 as a 1963 model.
Because of the relatively large number of TR3As sold in
the United States, along with their “instant classic” appeal,
many have survived. Like nearly all English cars, Triumphs
suffered from rust but there are plenty of restored and even
good original examples to be found at reasonable prices. A
nicely restored car might set you back $30,000-$35,000
and up, while an excellent driver can be found for $17,000-
$22,000 with little diffi culty. In the mood for a project? Plenty
of decent restorable cars are out there priced from $2500 and
up. But Triumphs can be expensive to restore, so my advice is
this: fi nd the nicest one you can afford and buy it. That way
you can immediately begin to enjoy classic sports car motor-
ing. Good luck!
