40 THE ENGLISH GARDEN SEPTEMBER 2019

Poole Cottage’s PERENNIAL PLANTS

These mostly informal perennials blend well with grasses for a contemporary look

DAHLIA ‘WINE-EYED JILL’
Pastel pink and apricot flowers mean
that this dahlia is entirely in keeping
with Jo’s soft, textural planting.

CROCOSMIA ‘LUCIFER’
With flowers in fiery coral-red, this
crocosmia tones perfectly with bronze
and beige grass flowerheads.

ACANTHUS MOLLIS
Tall spikes of purple hooded white
flowers are produced in high summer,
above a mound of large-toothed leaves.

FOENICULUM VULGARE
‘PURPUREUM’
As it matures and flowers, the foliage
of bronze fennel loses its purplish tint.

FILIPENDULA RUBRA
Also known as meadowsweet, this is
a superb choice for moist soils, thriving
in stream or pondside locations.

ECHINACEA PURPUREA
Pink-flowered echinaceas are always
the most vigorous, holding their own in
mixed planting and reliably hardy.

PERSICARIA AFFINIS
Flowering from June to September
above a neat, spreading mat of leaves,
this makes excellent groundcover.

PENSTEMON ‘GARNET’
Vivid purple flowers help this cultivar
stand out. Protect the crowns of the
plant over winter in cold areas.

SANGUISORBA
‘PINK TANNA’
Bobbly flowers are borne above large
clumps of deeply divided leaves.
