top that’s just the ticket (now
£12.99) and a simple wrap top,
shirt-tail dress in eau de nil
(£69.99, both mango.com).
Whistles does a canary yellow,
sleeveless slip dress (£169,
whistles.com) and Topshop
has satin, wide-legged, cropped
trousers in ivory (now £36,
topshop.com) that look good
with a fitted sleeveless top.
That’s if you want to go down
the satin trouser route, which
you may not. If you do, keep
them wide and floppy; satin
straining on hips is not the
look we’re aiming for.
Then, of course, there are all
the evening options satin has
always been good for: & Other
Stories has a pretty, Thirties-
style, yellow maxi dress (£89,
stories.com).
Yellow looks extra good in
satin. I’ve got my eye on a dark
peony-coloured fit-and-flare
dress from Kate Spade —
though it is a look-away-now
price (£450).
And there’s any number of
satin jackets, including an
oyster satin-look tuxedo from
Topshop (£30 reduced,
topshop.com), which will look
chic with black satin or velvet,
come winter. There’s no going
back, you see. Satin is the new
leopard print.
Nights
in bright
satin (and^
days, too!)
get from new highlights, or a
scarf that makes your eye col-
our pop. It’s quite a revelation.
At the Dior men’s show in
Paris in June, Kate Moss
showed the world how to do
satin the modern way, when she
wore a satin shirt tucked into
high-waisted trousers with
suede heels.
And in case you’re thinking
summer satin sounds like a
lightning strike sort of
fashion, don’t be too hasty to
disregard it. By autumn you
will be weighing up the pros of
a chocolate satin blouse versus
a slippery burnt orange dress.
You’ll be wearing it day or night
— or both.
T
he unexpected
‘For Day’ tag is this
season’s running
theme. There has
been lace for day, and long for
day, and sequins for day — but
the only one that’s going to
improve your day rather than
complicate it (in my opinion)
is the fabric with slither.
You can wear it eighties-
style: perhaps a jewel-coloured
blouse (Zara has one in
emerald green, £49.99, zara.
com) with a nippy skirt and
heels. You can wear it Kate
Moss style, in the form of a
masculine shirt, unbuttoned
low (try hawesandcurtis.
co.uk, £39) and tucked in to
smart trousers.
You can upgrade any of your
summer staples to satin: a long
shirt-dress in petrol blue (£295,
irisfashion.co.uk) or ivory
(£64.99, reserved.com); the slip
skirt that has been as
ubiquitous as flip flops this
summer drapes best on the
body in satin (£29, warehouse.
co.uk); and a contrasting
camisole top to go under a
jacket always looks best in this
fabric (£12.99, zara.com).
The key to keeping satin
modern is pairing it with more
casual fabrics — a fluid satin
skirt with a T-shirt, a
masculine-cut shirt tucked
into jeans — and wearing it in
a casual way.
Dresses should drape loosely
around the body, skirts should
flow, not cling.
Satin can’t help being sexy,
but the trick is to avoid those
boudoir and barfly cliches and
wear it in a fresh way — that
means sharp shapes and a
slightly looser fit. Mango has a
raspberry, V-neck, flare-sleeve
NOTTING HILL
Think you
know
everything
about...
N
OT to blow my own
trumpet, but I was
in right at the very
beginning of the
new satin trend.
I’ve been wearing two satin shirts
(one pink, one yellow) for months
now, with trousers and jeans and
skirts — and, this being the key to
this season’s satin, I’ve been wearing
them in the day.
Admittedly, at first it felt a bit too
luxey; I was worried I would look like
I’d never made it home after a party.
But I soon got over it.
Satin — silk’s glossy, richer sister —
adds polish and makes me feel more
feminine. The light-reflecting shine
gives you the sort of instant lift you

SUMMER SATIN:
THE RULES
WEAR it with casual
fabrics in the day, not
head to toe.
TRY a silvery grey or
pink mannish shirt to
wear with trousers.
GO for fluid skirts in
block colours.
A SATIN trouser-suit
could be your partywear
come autumn — but keep
the trousers a loose fit.
