If YOU’RE
looking for
a do-it-all
mascara that
will give lashes
length, volume, lift and
definition (and who isn’t?)
the new Avon True 5-in-1
Lash Genius Mascara (£9,
avon.uk.com) might be the
one that does the trick.
The brush is shaped to
catch every lash, even the
shortest ones in the
corners of the eyes.
The gel formula is extra
pigmented for a really
intense black and is both
smudge-proof and water-
resistant — ideal for warm,
humid days.
Shameless Indulgence
WHETHER at home or away, in the
summer we want a lighter, fresher
scent that can be worn all day
and into the evening without
feeling cloying.
Lancome’s new Idole (£85 for
75ml, lancome.co.uk), is perfect
for the job: a ‘clean’ rose fragrance
that’s delicate and feminine. The
brand’s first new scent in seven
years, it was developed by three
female perfumers (it’s billed as
‘Made for women, by women’).
The perfume is wearable, light
and sophisticated. Its central
ingredient is rose, complemented
by layers of white jasmine and
notes of bright, citrusy bergamot;
sweet, juicy pear; vanilla; white
musk; and pink peppercorn.
This modern, refreshing blend
comes in the world’s thinnest
perfume bottle, which is refillable
and almost as pretty as the scent.

Rowena BiRd, 59, co-founded
beauty brand Lush in 1995 with
Mark and Mo Constantine, Helen
ambrosen, Liz Bennett and Paul
Greaves. She lives with her
husband, Mike, in dorset.
GROWING up, I loved make-up. My
mum didn’t wear any, but my auntie
Penny was very glamorous — she
had a blonde beehive. She would let
me play at her dressing table with
all the powder compacts. As soon as
I got pocket money, I went off to
Woolworths to buy my own.
But I didn’t realise this could be a
job until a careers officer suggested
it. So, in 1980, I left college to train
as a beauty therapist.
After graduating, I saw a three-
line ad in a magazine for a position
at a beauty clinic in Poole, Dorset. I
had always dreamed of living by the
sea, so I applied and got it.
That’s how I met Mark (the owner,
a hair and scalp expert) and the
rest of the team: Mo, a receptionist;
Liz, a beautician; Helen, a scientist;
and Paul, a computer technician. It
was fabulous — we all brought
different skills to the group.
Mark was a real hippy, so we were
inventing natural, cruelty-free
products to sell in bulk to The Body
Shop. Then, in 1990, we set up our
own mail-order company: Cosmetics
To Go. But, after overtrading and a
flood that destroyed all our
computers, we lost everything. It
was such a shock.
We all went away to lick our
wounds and apply for other jobs.
But we soon realised we were only
really employable to each other —
we’re all a bit off the wall!
So we decided to try again and
turn the Poole clinic into a store,
selling handmade, natural, ethical
products. However, this time, we
couldn’t afford any packaging —
we had no money left.
This was our lightbulb moment: we
would make solid products in
blocks, so customers could cut off
as much as they wanted, with no
need for expensive wrapping. It
would be fun and hands-on: an
expression of our personalities.
I thought: ‘Blimey, no one will buy
this.’ But they did!
In 1995, we opened two stores in
London. Today, we have 104 shops
in the UK and 928 worldwide. We
now also sell ‘naked’ make-up and
refillable tins. If we use plastic, it is
recycled and recyclable.
When we started out, no one was
talking about the environment.
Awareness has built up and up. We
are the first generation to know
we’re destroying the planet — and
the last that can do anything about
it. Our aim is to give people a choice
— every one of us is responsible.
