LANCASHIRE FACE

GROUND DILEMMA

AS ASHES SET TO

CLASH WITH T20
MoRE fun and games at Lanca-
shire. Last year, the Red Rose
county faced the prospect of giving
up home-field advantage in the t20
Blast quarter-finals thanks to a
potential clash with a Liam Gal-
lagher concert, which was subse-
quently avoided when results
meant they ended up playing
away.
this year, with Lancashire top-
ping the north group, it is the Ashes
test at old trafford which coin-
cides with the last-eight dates. the
county say they are in discussions
with the ECB over potential ven-
ues. Given out-ground options are
limited, a neutral site may well be
on the cards.
Meanwhile, Lancashire officials
have apologised for confusion over
refunds for Friday’s washed out
Roses affair. Initially, the club said
that members would not be
refunded face value. However, they
later clarified that members who
had paid extra for t20 tickets
would be reimbursed, although
those with t20 season tickets will
not be entitled to a refund unless
further games are washed out.

FIFA have inadvertently landed a
small British broadcaster in
trouble after a member of their
commentary team for the Under 20
World Cup was overheard saying
“f****** hell” down the microphone
before Ecuador’s clash with Italy.
FIFA ‘apologised unreservedly’ and
blamed the language, heard during the
Ecuadorean national anthem, on an
‘audio malfunction’. But Freesports,
who took FIFA’s feed for broadcast in
the UK, were hauled in front of Ofcom.
The watchdog found that they had
breached regulations on offensive
language before the watershed and
Freesports will now have a mark on
their record.

ED WOODWARD has
encouraged Ole Gunnar
Solskjaer (below) to start parking
in the manager’s spot at
Manchester United’s Carrington
training ground.
The Norwegian was reluctant to
use the space, given he saw it as
‘the gaffer’s (Sir Alex Ferguson’s)
spot’ which he did not feel
comfortable taking.
However, executive vice
chairman Woodward, perhaps
wary of continued jibes
that United live in the
past, or perhaps of
the radical opinion
that the manager
should park in the
manager’s parking
space, is keen for the
club to move forward
and has made his
feelings
known.

At A recent meeting
between Premier League
managers, the topic of the
English window closing
three weeks earlier than
those in Europe was
brought up.
three managers in
particular voiced very clear
opinions on this,
according to those
present, and they

were Pep Guardiola,
Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio
Pochettino. tottenham
chief Pochettino, whose
club may well face reduced
bids from the continent for
a number of their players,
including Christian
Eriksen, who changed the
game against Aston Villa
on Saturday, then used his
pre-match press

conference to complain
about the differing
deadlines in public.
there is a sense among
coaches of clubs outside
the Big Six that if the
higher-profile bosses
continue to lobby against
the mismatched windows,
then the league will
consider changing things
back to how they were.

the pop for the whole trip.

AS THEY LAY OFF BOOZE

MORE than 20 British companies,
from public relations to signage
and venue construction, have been
involved with the Pan American Games
which concluded yesterday in Lima.
Many of those involved are veterans of
London 2012 and their input has
provided a much-needed export boost
ahead of Brexit.
The government signed a unique deal
with their Peruvian counterparts two
years ago, little knowing that the event
may well end up becoming a much-
needed example of how the UK can
operate following its anticipated
departure from the European Union.

the news will be delivered at Edgbaston,
which will host matches following a
successful joint bid by the International
Cricket Council and the England and
Wales Cricket Board.

HE may have been sacked by the BBC,
but Danny Baker will be back on the
airwaves with the broadcaster’s star
man Gary Lineker later this week.
The former 5 Live presenter was
swiftly fired over a tweet which
showed a couple holding hands with
a chimpanzee wearing clothes that
was captioned ‘Royal Baby leaves
hospital’.
Some claimed the tweet, which Baker

deleted and described as a ‘stupid
unthinking gag’, mocked the Duchess
of Sussex’s racial heritage.
No episodes of the entertaining
Lineker & Baker: Behind Closed Doors
podcast, recorded in Lineker’s kitchen,
have since aired.
However, that will soon change, with a
new show set to go out later this week.
Lineker tweeted to say that the return
comes ‘after a summer break’.

Hull win bolsters

play-off ambitions

HULL strengthened
their Super League
play-off ambitions and
increased their
opponents’ relegation
fears with a routine
26-16 win at Wakefield.
British Army winger
Ratu Naulago scored
two long-range tries
in the Black and
Whites’ 15th win of the
season, putting them
above Wigan and
alongside second-
placed Warrington.
Coach Lee Radford
said: ‘We’re still in
there, we’re still
swinging, nobody is
giving us a mention

and I quite like that.’
This loss leaves
Wakefield two points
above bottom club
London Broncos with
four games left. Coach
Chris Chester said: ‘I
think one win would
be enough.’
Krisnan Inu scored 20
points as Salford kept
their top-five hopes
alive with a 32-12 win
over Huddersfield at
the AJ Bell Stadium.
They produced a late
comeback to claim
victory.

at Brands Hatch

JAMIE CHADWICK

became the first W Series
champion after a nail-biting
final race at Brands Hatch.
the Briton failed to secure
the podium finish she
needed to guarantee the
title, slipping from the lead
to finish fourth, the only
time in the six-race season
she has finished outside the
top three.
But the 21-year-old from
Bath won the champion-
ship and £415,000 top prize
as rival Beitske Visser could
only cross the line in third.
‘I definitely didn’t make
that easy for myself — that
was the worst 30 minutes of
my life followed by the best
30 minutes,’ Chadwick said.
She started from pole
position and held the lead
for the opening 10 minutes
of the 30-minute race. But

she was under constant
pressure from compatriot
and eventual race-winner
Alice Powell and Finland’s
Emma Kimilainen, who
passed her on successive
corners.
that put Visser on Chad-
wick’s tail and the Dutch-
woman overtook her with
three minutes left after a
breathtaking passage of
action during which the
pair made contact.
With Visser third, Chad-
wick had to finish in the top
10 to secure the title. She
nursed her car home to win
the inaugural season of the
all-female series by 10
points. ‘I’m relieved. It feels
amazing to win the champi-
onship. this has turned my

career round. Hopefully
now we can go on to bigger
things.’
Chadwick was appointed
as development driver by
the Williams Formula one
team in May, boosting her
hopes of becoming the first
female to compete in an F1
race since Italian Lella
Lombardi in 1976.
FIA Superlicense points
— 40 of which are required
to race in F1 — will be up for
grabs next season as W
Series expands, but Chad-
wick revealed she may not
defend her title. ‘My aspira-
tions are much greater than
W Series,’ she said. ‘I want
to achieve a lot and next
year I will prepare myself in
he best way to do that.’ Champion: Chadwick^ GETTY IMAGES
