ENGLAND’S PERFECT WARM-UP
england turned on the style to end
Wales’ hopes of topping the world
rankings for the first time with a 33-19
win at Twickenham yesterday.
Wales would have ended new Zealand’s
10-year reign as the world’s no 1 side if
they had avoided defeat, but tries from
Billy Vunipola, Joe Cokanasiga and
luke Cowan-dickie spoiled the party.
england head coach eddie Jones names

his World Cup squad of 31 today.
Fit-again england centre Jonathan
Joseph, one of many impressive
performers, said: ‘as a collective, we can
go to this World Cup and be successful.
I believe this team is going to peak at
the perfect time.’

Ole gUnnaR SOlSKJaeR hailed his
young Manchester United side as they
kicked off their season with a 4-0 thrashing
of Chelsea at Old Trafford.
Marcus Rashford scored twice either side of a strike
by anthony Martial, before 21-year-old new boy daniel
James fired a fourth to inflict a heavy defeat in Frank
lampard’s first game as Chelsea boss. Solskjaer fielded
the youngest side in the Premier league this weekend
— with an average age of 24 years and 227 days — and
he said: ‘We have found a way we want to play. We took
risks but that’s the way here, you’ve got to go for it.’

Double joy for Rashford

as United start in style

FRanK laMPaRd hit back at
Jose Mourinho last night after his
old boss criticised Chelsea’s
young players in their 4-0
thrashing at Manchester United.
Mourinho, working as a pundit for
Sky Sports, took issue with
lampard’s team selection for his
first competitive game in charge.
‘They had a possibility to play
with more know-how,’ said
Mourinho. ‘Marcos alonso was on
the bench, n’golo Kante was on
the bench, Olivier giroud was on
the bench. a little experience
would fit well with the team. You
look to the performance of Mason
Mount, Tammy abraham, even of
andreas Christensen and for
matches of this dimension you
need a little bit more.’
lampard reacted with disbelief,
saying: ‘I don’t have to be too
concerned about what anyone
else says, the pundits, but what is
clear is the squad is the squad
we’ve got and I believe in it.’
