Parkinson’s
Bolton plea
LEAGUE ONE
THIS WEEKEND
BOLTON manager Phil Parkinson has
told would-be owner Laurence Bassini
to ‘leave this club alone’ and let it
‘get on with building its future back
together’.
A takeover by Football Ventures was on
‘the brink of completion’ last week
before Bassini was granted a court
order blocking the club’s sale.
Due to a shortage of players, Bolton
fielded the youngest side in the club’s
145-year history — with an average age
of 19 — in the 0-0 draw against
COVENTRY. After which, Parkinson said:
‘No more messing about, get your heads

LEAGUE TWO
THIS WEEKEND
MACCLESFIELD were everyone’s
favourites for relegation, but a 3-0 win
over LEYTON ORIENT will give Sol
Campbell hope of keeping them up for a
second year. Theo Archibald put
Macclesfield ahead with a sweet strike
before Paddy Osadebe and Theo Vassell
added gloss. Manager Campbell said:
‘Last week we were hit with a sucker-
punch [conceding a late goal in the 1-0
defeat by Exeter] but today the lads
played really well, stuck to their jobs
and it was a really good performance.’
SCUNTHORPE’S horrid start to life in the
bottom tier got worse with a 4-1
drubbing at CHELTENHAM. ‘I was
embarrassed and angry, and the fans
are as well,’ said Scunthorpe manager
Paul Hurst.
SALFORD were dealt their first blow
in the Football League, losing 2-0
away at CRAWLEY. James Hanson
scored against his former club to
earn GRIMSBY a 1-1 draw at
home to BRADFORD. MANSFIELD
came back from two down to
salvage a 2-2 draw against
MORECAMBE. On his 600th league
appearance Jabo Ibehre wasn’t able to
cap the milestone with a goal as
CAMBRIDGE drew 0-0 with NEWPORT.
THE tweet dropped within two hours of
the final whistle. Derby’s ticket allocation
for midweek was sold out.
The combination of watching a second
string in the Carabao Cup at League Two
Scunthorpe was proving irresistible to
supporters who had just seen their team
grind out a draw at Pride Park.
Hopefully someone is briefing new coach
Phillip Cocu about a fanbase which can be
both a blessing and a curse in terms of its
demands. For years the Dutchman was
Mr PSV, as a player, youth coach, assistant
manager and manager in Eindhoven and
now he needs to get under the skin of the
Championship club.
So who better to ask than Mr Derby? That
is long-serving skipper Richard Keogh,
who on Saturday played his 350th game
for the Rams. ‘It’s gone so quickly,’ Keogh
said. ‘It’s rare for a player to spend so
long at one club these days and I’ve loved
every second of it. I’m disappointed we
couldn’t win but we didn’t lose either and
we’ll get better.’
Cocu will hope so. He admitted the
first-half tempo was too slow against
organised opponents and then became
too fast which caused sloppy loss of
possession.
The crowd, who in May suffered play-off
heartbreak, are desperate to go again
and that inevitably puts pressure on
players and manager. On Saturday they
chanted for Jack Marriott instead of
Martyn Waghorn, who had a penalty
saved, briefly asked Cocu to give them a
wave, and were persuaded into a
‘Rooooo-ney’ chant pre kick-off.
Wayne Rooney arrives in January,
another plus as far as Keogh is concerned.
‘The club is buzzing — the whole city’s
buzzing,’ he said. ‘We want to be in the
top three or four when Wayne arrives
and he’ll give everyone a lift. He’ll be
inspirational.’
Credit to Swansea, especially Newcastle
loanee Freddie Woodman who stopped
the spot-kick. ‘I got lucky, it was
guesswork,’ insisted Woodman despite
evidence to the contrary from
manager Steve
Cooper.
COCU FEELS FORCE OF FAN POWER
the scoring on Saturday. Tom
Ince levelled, but late goals from
Chuks Aneke and Chelsea loanee
Conor Gallagher helped Lee
Bowyer’s side cast off their
apparent inferiority complex.
‘Sooner or later they’ll start to
realise that they are a good side
and they do deserve to be in this
league,’ Bowyer said.
An emotional day at QPR as they
officially renamed Loftus Road
the Kiyan Prince Foundation
Stadium, after their 15-year-old
academy player stabbed to death
in May 2006. Grant Hall’s late
header earned Rangers a point
after Karlan Grant’s penalty gave
HUDDERSFIELD the lead.
Two other teams relegated from
the Premier League are off and
running. FULHAM beat BLACKBURN
2-0 with Tom Cairney scoring a
25-yard screamer against his
former club. And CARDIFF beat
LUTON 2-1 thanks to a 96th minute
winner from Isaac Vassell (right).
The striker joined Cardiff on
deadline day having been very
close to signing for... Luton.
together quickly and sort this mess out
because everybody is absolutely sick
and tired of it.’
There was stardust at PORTSMOUTH,
where Hollywood actor Will Ferrell was
a guest of chairman Michael Eisner. He
saw Portsmouth get off the mark with a
2-0 win over TRANMERE.
BLACKPOOL are top of the table, having
stuck three past SOUTHEND. The
damage was done in the 3-1 away win
before Blackpool’s James Husband was
sent off, with Nathan Delfouneso scoring
twice after Harry Lennon’s own goal had
given the visitors the lead.
