Horse & Hound – 01 August 2019

(coco) #1
Cornwall for many years as duty
farrier. I’m on site from 7am until
the jumping fi nishes. I am sent
one pass and, until I complained,
had to provide my own lunch. If
shows gave a family pass to judges
and essential services, it would
cost them nothing, tradestands
would benefi t and everyone would
be happy.
Judges and essential services
give their time and experience
often for free or for little reward,
so look after them or lose them.

ROLL ON DUBLIN
WE are very much looking
forward to competing at
Dublin Horse Show — it has an
atmosphere like no other, and
the opportunity to compete our
Connemaras on their home turf in
front of their breeders is fantastic.
The organisation and
management of the show is
second to none, especially with
regard to welfare guidelines that
include a horse weighing scale. It’s
this attention to detail, ensuring
the best world stage for Irish-bred
horses, that should be applauded
and demonstrated as best practice
to other shows.

MORE CLARITY NEEDED

WITH regard to Carl Hester’s
opinion (18 July), it’s great to
have lots of diff erent dressage
championships for all levels to
experience, but the problem lies in
working out the eligibility. It is so
complicated as one competition
may make you ineligible for
another and in some cases,
members end up qualifying for the
wrong level by mistake.
Needless to say, this is
upsetting for riders who have
worked hard to qualify. And
often they don’t fi nd out they’ve
qualifi ed at the wrong level until
they enter for the championship,
by which time it’s too late. The
system needs more clarity for
eligibility to be less complicated,
not fewer championships.

PLEASE LOOK AFTER US

WITH regard to your news item
about how poorly judges are
treated (27 June), farriers on call
at shows are viewed in much the
same way.

LETTEROFTHEWEEK

AS an avid eventing fan, I
have been following the press
surrounding the growing
number of cancellations of
events due to lack of entries
(news, 11 July). While the
common thread is the cost
of both entry and training
a horse to that stage, is
another reason due to the
transparency of results anyone
can access so easily online?
Are people not putting
entries in unless they’re sure
they’ll have a
good round? If a
combination has
a bad run, then
the future sale
prospect of a horse

is potentially
hindered as we
are so obsessed
with Googling
horse details
before we’ve even
tried them.
Whereas once
riders would enter,
have fun and learn
from mistakes, in
our ever-growing
world where you
can fi nd anything
out at the tap of
a button, has this
started to impact on
the entries?
