Things are about to
change for Art Jakarta. Case
in point: A new logo and also
a new identity explores how
identity of an art fair can be
more inspiring. To top it off,
for its 11th edition, the fair
will be moving to Jakarta’s
most prominent international
exhibition hub: The Jakarta
Convention Center, with
the hope that the visitors
can feel the ambiance of an
international-level art fair,
just like any other art fair
around the globe.
DAMAN: What is the theme
of this year’s Art Jakarta?
Tom Tandio: This year, we
present all-Asian galleries as
participants. We also want
to emphasize Asian culture,
especially Indonesia’s core
beliefs towards humanity
with its diverse cultures

language that we translated
through art.
DA: What's the story behind
this year's new logo and
identity from Art Jakarta?
TT: “The only clear thing is
art” is our tagline this year.
A message that conveys
"see nothing but art" and
we also wanted to make
an impression that art
has always been a part of
Jakarta. Because you can
never say Jakarta without art.
DA: How many artworks
will be put on display? How
were the works selected for
this year's event?
TT: There will be 70 galleries
in total—41 international
galleries and 39 national
galleries from Indonesia.
Each gallery will present
various selections of their
artists' recent artworks.
We also have Art Jakarta
Spot which is seven special
and large-scale on-site art
installations by well-known
artists. Also we have AJX,
three collaborative projects
between Art Jakarta and our
selected partners.
And we proudly present
Art Jakarta Play: Our art
educational workshop for
children under 12 years,
presented by UOB Indonesia
and Art Jakarta Charity, an
auction of unique rugs made
by 13 prominent Indonesian
artists as well as 30 limited
edition smartphones with
Eko Nugroho’s one-of-a-kind
artwork engraved on the
back, presented by OPPO.
DA: Is there a message, or
a feeling, that you hope
observers/visitors will get?
TT: To resonate with the
spirit of ‘gotong royong,’ this
year’s event is produced by
Indonesians, for Indonesians.
Entering a new decade, Art
Jakarta will reach a new
level, striving to be known as
the most attractive art fair
in Southeast Asia, appealing
to a local, regional and also
international audience.
DA: After eleven years, how
has Art Jakarta evolved?
TT: Art Jakarta is recognized
by the public as the biggest
annual art fair of the country
and is now handled by a
renewed professional team.
Although mainly coming from
art-related industries, each
member of our team came
with their own expertise
dedicated to taking care of
every aspect of the fair.
DA: What’s in the future for
Art Jakarta?
TT: We hope to become
this city’s pride and most
anticipated event, celebrated
by all Jakartans. We also
hope greater involvement
from businesses that
contribute to the success of
this event.
Art Jakarta is open for public
and will run from 30 August
until 1 September. Im
