rare co py ofHarr yPotter and the Philosopher’s

Stonehassoldfor £28,500atauction.Itw as

one of just 500 originalcopies from the first

hard-back print run of the bestselling book. Of those

copies, 300 had been sent to libraries, including

the one that has just sold at the auction, which took

placeatBishton Hall in Staffordshire.

It had been bought, along withapile of other

bookscosting £1each, atasale around 20 years

ago,and its owner didn’trealise itsvalue until

they asked an auctioneer tocome andvalue their

old books. TheHarr yPotterbookwasbought by

aprivatecollector on 31 July–which is also the

birthday of author J.K. Rowling and HarryPotter

himself. Thereare two mistakes in the book that

reveal itwasmade during the first print run,

including the wordphilosopher,which is spelled

“philospher”on the backcover.
