£4 million makeover to improve theexperience
for visitors. Sutton Hoo is home to what isconsidered
to be one of the greatest archaeological discoveries
ever made in the UK. Archaeology is th
of the past from things that people hav
left behind.
In 1939,ahuge burial shipwas
found at Sutton Hoo,thought to
be theresting placeofanAnglo-
Saxon king and all his treasure.
The discoverywasmade after the
owner of the land, EdithPerry,
noticedaseries of mysterious
mounds around her estate andcalled
in an archaeologist.
Beneath the moundswas
afull-sizeship.Ont he shipwasa
burial chamber filled with treasures, including
gold jewellery,silverwareand awarrior’shelmet.
Historians believe the chamberwasfor King
Raedwald, who ruled theregion of East Anglia.
The artefacts helped to improve our understanding
of 7thcentury England.

When the SecondWorld Warbroke out in 1939,
the items weretaken away for safekeeping. Some
arenow on display at the British Museum inLondon.
