AIRFIX’S SEPTEMBER release

schedule is as busy as ever with

its main autumn release, the 1/

Blackburn Buccaneer S.2, taking

centre stage.

The initial release will cater for

Royal Navy ‘flat-bellied’ versions,

with markings for airframes

assigned to 800 and 809 Naval

Air Squadrons. There’s a mix of

armament, with a choice of bombs,

rocket pods and ‘slipper’ fuel

tanks, and a choice of open/closed

bomb bay.

For the rest of the releases,

there’s a great mix of subjects,

from commemorative D-Day and

Apollo 11 kits to the third batch of

re-boxed 1/35 armour, while the

Vintage Classic series features

another sailing ship and more

familiar 1/76 military products.

This year has been rich in terms of

anniversaries, and the Normandy

landings are recognised by four

gift sets: the D-Day Air Assault set

recreates a typical airfield scene

with a Hawker Typhoon, refuelling

bowser and other vehicles, while

the D-Day Operation Overlord Set

depicts landing craft disgorging

tanks and vehicles as troops storm

a German fortified position. The

other two packages (Battlefront

and Sea Assault) are smaller in

scale and portray a village battle

and amphibious landing scene

respectively. All come with a vac-

formed base, making them instant

dioramas, and great gifts too.

The Apollo landings receive

similar attention – the 1/

Astronauts figures are already

available (see Figure Reviews,

p.116) – the classic 1/144 Saturn

V makes a welcome return and

there’s a Lunar Module/Astronauts

diorama combo ‘One Small Step

for Man’.

Large-scale armour releases

this month feature an early

Jagdpanzer 38(t) Hetzer, mid-

production Tiger I and a T-34/

as produced at the 112 (Nizhny

Novgorod/Krasnoye Sormovo)

Factory. As with previous offerings,

these are all re-boxed Academy

kits, with new box artwork and
