Airfix Model World – September 2019

(Romina) #1

A TEST shot of Airfix’s newly
tooled 1/72 MiG-17F Fresco
arrived just as AMW went to
press. An exclusive build will
feature in November's issue,
but here's a sneak peak.
It comprises four styrene
runners (including one frame
incorporating the clear parts)
and the firm has raised the
bar yet again in terms of
finesse. Exterior panels and
rivets are represented by
finely engraved lines and
depressions and the type’s
distinctive shape has been
captured faithfully. There’s
a two-piece ejection seat,

adorning the well-appointed
cockpit (and another al fresco
pilot depiction), while options
include open/closed airbrakes
and canopy and raised/
lowered undercarriage. Neat
touches abound, whether it’s
the inclusion of a barrel to
place under the tail to keep
the nosewheel on the ground,

or the closed mainwheel doors
inserted from the inside. Two
markings options are included;
the first is a camouflaged
frontline North Vietnamese
airframe, while the second is
an overall natural metal Soviet
state research test institute
machine. More details are
