Attention then returned to the
engine, with ICM’s suggestion that
it be painted gloss black. Most
online reference photos indicate
it was coloured in the same ‘Olive
Green’ (see panel) tone as the
rest of the vehicle, so it’s possible
this had been repainted on the
restored truck. Either scheme
could be used if the engine was
displayed separately, although
research indicated a number
of V8 engines found in
France were painted
US Olive Drab. For
this diorama a typical
‘Ford’ blue (actually
Humbrol 96 RAF Blue- http://www.humbrol.
com) was used to
indicate a factory
replacement engine
and make it stand
out against a largely
green base. The
maintenance cradle
was scratch-built from square-
section brass tubing and plastic
strut, before being airbrushed with
diluted 11 Silver, followed by a coat
of hairspray and then a top coat
of LifeColor LC 05 Matt Orange
(www.airbrushes.com). Once this
had dried to the touch it was
distressed with a water-dampened
stiff brush to reveal the underlying
metallic tones. The engine was
then mounted on a Plus Model
pallet, which was in turn placed on
a pallet truck – both came from its
345 Pallet Truck and Pallets set
(www.plusmodel.cz). Everything
was then painted and distressed in
the same manner as the cradle.Labelling conundrums
By this point, the chassis had dried
thoroughly, so the suspension
units and drive train were
assembled and added. The next
step concerned the exhausts;
if the engine is being displayed
separately, a strip of plastic carddisplayed separately, although

tone to emphasise edges and areas of shadow.
Despite the painting guide specifying ‘Olive Green’, the vehicle was instead airbrushed
with several light layers of a bespoke Humbrol enamels mix to replicate SCC15 Olive Drab. The vinyl tyres had prominent
mould seams – these were removed
by first priming the wheels and then
mounting them on a small grinding
wheel mandrel, before rotating them
against a standing stick until the
excess vinyl was removed.
