Colour preparations
Readying the model for paint
started with a comprehensive
sanding session with gradually
finer Micro-Mesh pads, due to
the amount of retro-fitting with
various types of plastic and resin.

This highlighted several
slight imperfections in
the aftermarket parts,
which were treated by filling
and sanding until there was a
uniform surface. Fine layers of
UMP027 Ultimate Primer Grey

several minor flaws and these
were revisited with filler and

 All undercarriage and flap bays received matt white after the airframe had been primed;
these were then masked before the camouflage colours were added.

 The primer highlighted several areas with uneven seams, so filler was used to treat these
blemishes; once dry this was sanded with increasingly fine grades of abrasive paper.

Tamiya’s Tape for Curves (87177)
was an ideal guide when re-scribing
panel lines lost during sanding.

 The light tones of the camouflage colours lent themselves to a pre-shade along the
panel lines, prior to the base shades being applied.

 A study of reference photos revealed WD955 had a coloured panel on the wing-tip tanks,
which was added by masking and then painting it black, followed by a matt white topcoat.
