As the sky darkens after sunset
on January 1, the brightest
object in the sky is Venus in
the west. Civil twilight ends
about 35 minutes after sunset,
allowing an increasing number
of stars to be visible. Civil
twilight is when the sun is
six-degrees below the horizon
and shines less on the air
above our heads.
If you are in a rural location,
away from light pollution
and the glare of neighbours’
outdoor lights, the Milky Way
will arc up from the west,
over your right shoulder and
into the east. Straddling the
hazy band are two prominent
stars that form the Summer
Triangle. But we will talk
more about this when the
Summer Triangle is better
placed in the sky and the
evenings are warmer.
Looking to the east are the
bright stars of winter. Orion is
struggling to climb above the
horizon. He is a “night person”
and is slow to get up!
Events that are based on the
horizon and the meridian use
corrections for both your time
zone and the Ottawa Time
Corrections table. Celestial
events that do not depend
on their positions in the sky
only need your time zone
correction.
