July opens with an 88 percent
lit moon. At 10 p.m., it is
close to the meridian. Saturn
and Jupiter are rising in the
southeast. They are only
six degrees apart and will fit
in the field of view of most
binoculars. The rings of Saturn
may require a small telescope,
but if the binoculars are held
very steady, you may be able to
follow—from night to night—
Jupiter’s brightest moons
orbiting the planet.
The moon grows to “full” on
July 5, then it reduces down
to a new moon on the 20th.
So for most of the month, the
evening sky will be free from
moonlight. From a dark site,
the Milky Way is growing in
dominance, arcing from the
south toward the northeast.
Compare this with the western
sky, which has only a few
bright stars.
At the end of the month,
the Great Square of Pegasus
rises in the east at 10 p.m.
as the moon dominates the
wes t er n sk y.
