The evenings are starting
to get cooler, allowing for
bug-proof clothing without
overheating. In mid-month,
Edmonton nights are about
seven and a half hours long
while Ontario nights are
almost nine hours. Civil
twilight ends at about
8:30 p.m., so we can still get
a good night’s sleep after
we get our fix of starlight.
When I think of August, I
remember the Perseid meteor
shower. Although these
showers are always better after
midnight, this year it is best for
evening observers because the
moon rises at about 1 a.m. on
the 13th and will wash out
the view of fainter meteors.
For early risers in mid-
month, Venus is joined by
the moon above the eastern
horizon. These will add a
sparkle to the beginning of
your day and may also provide
a photo op with the colourful
light of dawn.
