176Time for school! Coincidentally,
the full moon rises near the
end of twilight on the first of
the month. So, we can count
on the evening sky from
being free of moonlight
for most of the month. Our
little ones will be able to see
starlight before they go to bed,
giving them something to
talk about at school.
September is the month
when the Milky Way
dominates the evening sky,
arcing from the southwest,
overhead and into the
northeast. High overhead is the
Summer Triangle asterism,
and low in the south is the
Teapot, or kettle, asterism.
It is down to the right from
Jupiter and Saturn—the
brightest celestial objects in
the evening sky.
Although we tend to say
goodbye to summer at the end
of August, when the school
holidays are over, the official
end of summer is on September
22 at 9:31 EDT. But not to
worry, there are usually many
more summer-like days left
before winter.
