WATERING TIPS
Water the rhizomes deeply at
planting time. Before watering
again, allow the top 7.5 cm (3
inches) of soil to dry completely.
Then, water deeply. Vines will
grow quickly throughout the
growing season. Continue to
water deeply to support this
aggressive growth.

ORNAMENTAL APPEAL
Female hop plants produce
flowers that are the familiar
cones. As the flowers mature, they
produce pollen with a wonderful
scent. Our favourite variety, so
far, is the Golden Nugget hop

(Humulus lupulus ‘Nugget’).
It produces a bumper crop of
decorative fruit by midsummer.
The vibrant green foliage adds
beauty to the garden from spring
through late fall.
From an ornamental point of
view, hops have some advantages
over many other twining vines
in the Canadian garden: they are
generally insect- and disease-free,
they grow quickly (be prepared
to cut them back severely each
spring) and they are attractive.
We have seen hops produce an
attractive cover for an arbour or
over a lattice covering a patio.
