Working on the apex

How to handle long shoots

The apex before work. There are a few guy wires and
the apex has become very thick and coarse

Coarse branches are removed and cut
back, unnecessary branches are removed,
creating a lot of space in the apex

Some areas are pulled again with guy wires
to correct their position and orientation. There
is no need to wire every branch

A piece of bamboo is used to change the
orientation of a branch

The work after pruning: in a few weeks' time new
shoots will grow and need to be pruned, this must be
done during the entire growing season. The aim is to
achieve a dense canopy as shown by the green line

TECHNIQUE

Typical for Zelkova, thickening of branch tips Make corrective cuts to improve ramification

A broom style Zelkova that needs some pruning Long shoots like these have become too strong and
have a large internode. So cut back to one or two
leaves

At the top, shoots become very strong. If left too
long, as in this case, the smaller branches will decay
because they will not receive sun and energy
