Our profile of artist Lee Ufan, who
has a new exhibition in September
at Washington, D.C.’s Hirshhorn
Museum and Sculpture Garden, pro-
vided writer Robert Sullivan and
photographer Adrian Gaut with the
chance to meet an artist they’ve
both admired. “He’s a model, for me,
of the generative aspects of prac-
ticed reflection,” says Sullivan. “His
work is a real counterpoint to where
everything in our technologized
world herds us.” For Gaut, an earlier
visit to the Tadao Ando–designed
Lee Ufan Museum in Naoshima,
Japan, had left a lasting impression.
In person, says Gaut, “I found him
to be unusually reserved, yet he had
a very quiet and confident presence.”
The image at left of Gaut photo-
graphing Lee was captured toward
the end of the shoot. “We had already
decided we had the shot, but as he
was walking away from the window
I saw him rubbing his hands to-
gether, and I quickly grabbed the
camera for one more shot. It
ended up being the best shot of the
session.” —Christopher Ross
